Comox Valley Airport Releases Economic Impact Study
The Comox Valley Airport (YQQ) commissioned a new Economic Impact Study, highlighting the significant role the airport plays in supporting jobs, business activity, tourism, and economic growth across the Comox Valley and Vancouver Island.
The study concludes that YQQ civilian operations contribute $312 million in annual economic output and supports 1,690 jobs throughout the region. The findings reflect the broad economic activity generated by airport operations, airline service, on-site businesses, visitor spending, and the many industries that support aviation activity in the region.
As Vancouver Island's second-busiest airport, YQQ welcomed a record 449,849 passengers in 2025 and continues to expand connectivity to destinations across Canada, Mexico, and beyond. The airport serves as a critical transportation gateway for residents, businesses, visitors, and essential services throughout central and northern Vancouver Island.
The study demonstrates that the economic benefits of YQQ extend far beyond the terminal building. Airport activity supports employment opportunities across a wide range of sectors, including tourism, hospitality, transportation, construction, aviation, professional services and retail.
"The airport is an important piece of regional infrastructure that helps connect our communities to opportunities across Canada and internationally," says Comox Valley Airport CEO Mike Atkins. "As our region continues to grow, maintaining strong and reliable air service will remain essential to supporting economic development and quality of life."
The Economic Impact Study was completed by InterVISTAS Consulting Inc. and measures the direct, indirect, and induced economic benefits generated by airport-related activity.
Key findings from the study include:
- 1,690 jobs supported across the region,
- $90.7 Million in annual wages and salaries,
- $168.9 Million contribution to regional GDP,
- $312 Million in total annual economic output, and
- $206.5 Million in annual visitor spending.
