Join Our Board: Comox Valley Airport Seeks New Director
We are currently seeking applications to sit on our Governance Board.
The Comox Valley Airport Commission (CVAC) is a not-for-profit corporation dedicated to managing airport facilities to boost the economic growth of the Comox Valley and surrounding areas. We’re all about providing safe, sustainable and affordable air travel services to our passengers and communities.
Our Board of Directors plays a crucial role in steering our strategic direction, making key decisions, and overseeing the overall management of our operations. They ensure we stay on track and continue to thrive.
We are broadly representative of the Comox Valley, comprised of nine Directors including:
This position is for a local government nomination and, as such, shortlisted candidates will be provided to Comox, Courtenay, Cumberland and CVRD council for endorsement.
Statutory Qualifications:
To join the CVAC board, you need to be a qualified Commission candidate as outlined in our By-Laws. This means you:
- Don’t hold any elected public office;
- Aren’t employed by any level of government (municipal, provincial, or federal),
- Aren’t an employee of the Commission, and
- Aren’t a spouse, common-law partner, or child of a Director of the Commission.

We think the successful candidate will have sound judgement, high ethical standards and integrity. They will be a strategic thinker with excellent interpersonal skills, tact and diplomacy.
Core Competencies:
We are seeking a candidate who possesses a blend of the following skills and qualities:
- Critical and Strategic Thinking: Enabling effective problem-solving and decision-making.
- Financial Literacy: Proficiency in reading financial statements and understanding performance metrics.
- Understanding of CVAC: Appreciation for CVAC’s unique role as outlined in our Bylaws and mission, along with a good grasp of the legislative environment we operate in.
- Director Responsibilities: Solid understanding of a Director’s responsibilities and duties, and the ability to differentiate between corporate governance and management.
- Leadership Experience: Proven leadership from volunteer work or employment.
- Corporate Governance Knowledge: Knowledgeable about corporate governance and best practices.
- Expertise in one or more of the following areas: architecture, construction and development, land use planning, engineering, environmental and land use law.
- Emerging Issues and Change Management: Ability to anticipate emerging issues and lead organizational change.
- Relationship Building: Ability to build effective working relationships with other Board members and stakeholders.
- Communication Skills: The ability to convey complex information clearly and convincingly.
Education and Experience
We’re looking for candidates with:
- Experience serving on a board of directors for a significant public or private sector organization, or as an executive accountable to stakeholders;
- Expertise in one or more of the following areas: accounting or finance, engineering, air transportation, public relations, law, communications, security management, community relations, stakeholder engagement, public policy development, corporate governance; and
- Strong business skills and sound judgment, especially if gained through experience in large commercial organizations (this would be a big plus!).
