Comox Valley Airport Update - January 2007
Passenger Growth The Comox Valley Airport experienced very strong passenger growth during 2006. Passenger numbers were up 13.8% with most of that growth due to increases in the Calgary and Vancouver markets. The Air Canada Jazz flights to Calgary are becoming more popular while the benefits of the WestJet direct flights to Edmonton, which just started in December, will be realized with Vancouver Island recognition in that market place. 2007 passenger numbers should see strong growth with the Edmonton direct flights and additional air service development. ![]() Capital Improvements CVAC continues to invest in infrastructure to support and facilitate air passenger travel. There has been an increase in charter and corporate aircraft activity due to the favourable economic climate in the region. The additional ramp space built last year has easily met this demand. The popularity of the Comox Valley Airport with residents from the Malahat to north Vancouver Island continues and has necessitated improvements to the airport facilities. Additional check in counters and conveyors were added, upgrades to security systems, and most recently the addition of more long term parking was provided. An additional 160 parking spots were built making the total available 650. All but 12 spots were used during the peak demand of the Christmas period. CVAC will continue to provide infrastructure improvements as the need is identified. A significant further investment in airport infrastructure will be required to meet the ongoing demand. ![]() Customer Satisfaction A high degree of customer satisfaction with the Comox Valley Airport facilities is required for CVAC to achieve its Vision of becoming "Vancouver Island’s preferred mid-island gateway." CVAC is very pleased to report that for 2006, it has once again achieved the highest rating for customer satisfaction for all participating airports in Canada. This marks the third year in a row that Comox has taken top honours. Customers suggested that the availability of buses and taxis needs to improve as well as access roads to/from the airport. 2007 Outlook With the much improved BC economy and the dynamic Alberta economy, air travel through Comox will continue to show strong gains. As additional air service is provided, notably to the US market place, the Comox Valley Airport will see increased passenger numbers. As the Vancouver Island market improves, Comox is well positioned to implement long haul air service primarily to Europe. |
