Community Talent Showcased

Elasmasaur flying high

Three distinctly different types of artistic creations have been added to the décor of the Airport. What these unique pieces have in common is that they have been crafted or designed by local talent.

Throughout the Airport are a series of free flowing art panels which act as a striking backdrop to the enormous replicas of the Elasmosaur and Quetzalcoatlus that are floating in the Passenger Hold Lounge. These panels or banners that depict stylized birds, fish and plants reflect the natural environment that visitors come to see on the Island.

The natural history theme will be completed within the next few weeks with the addition of a kiosk and a fossil cast wall. The concept development and coordination for the installation was carried out by Comox Valley based creative development company GNG, of which Deb Griffith is owner.

The Comox Valley Potters Club has generously donated a beautiful clay mosaic mural depicting the four seasons of the Comox Valley. The four foot high murals, designed by potter Ev Johnston, stand in a welcoming position above the baggage belt in the international wing of the Airport.

Students from Sandwick School

Delivered just in time for the warm summer days were two picnic tables manufactured by students at Sandwick School. Within minutes of arrival, the tables were occupied with visitors. These are not your average picnic tables. They each weigh in at 1600 pounds, have a marble like finish surface, and are guaranteed for 200 years! The construction of the tables is a 2 month process involving casting, curing, and polishing. Students Kimberly Anderson, Devin Howie, Mike Bodie, Richie Donner, Andrew Hassard, Edward Laurie, and Josh St. Pierre, created these tables under the direction of Program Worker Rick Poulin. Principal Bob Dugas is proud of the students' finished product, and says that the tables can be ordered by the general public.

With the thousands of people who visit the Airport, it is an ideal public venue for showcasing the work of local artists. The Airport has partnered with the Comox Valley Community Arts Council to establish an exhibition policy. The juried artwork will be rotated four times a year. Calls for entries will be advertised within the next month. For more details visit the Arts Council website www.comoxvalleyarts.org or contact Pauline at 338-4417.
