Niagara Falls Airport designed by Stantec

When the new Comox Valley civilian airport opened its doors in the spring of 2004 the target was to have 200,000 passengers flying annually by the year 2007. This goal was reached in 2005 - well ahead of schedule. Another benchmark was reached by the end of 2007 when over 310,000 passengers chose to fly through YQQ that year. Chair Dave Mellin states "This substantial growth pattern has resulted in the Commission stepping up the planning cycle for future expansion. The goal is to increase the air terminal building capacity to accommodate larger, wide body aircraft which will allow direct flights to Vancouver Island from international destinations. Direct flights result in more efficient routing which will save money, time and greenhouse gases. Environmentally friendly technology will also be an important component of the design and construction."

A comprehensive analysis and planning exercise was undertaken by CVAC resulting in completed strategic and master plans which are available on the CVAC website comoxairport.com. These are essential working documents for future development and for seeking infrastructure funding at the provincial and federal levels.

The tentative date for the terminal expansion and construction is 2011. To meet that milestone a RFP for the design of international terminal building was issued. The successful candidate is Stantec Architecture Ltd. Airport CEO Chuck Fast says:
"This company has an excellent track record. Stantec is one of North America's leading airport design firms and has completed several airport projects worldwide. The Company's integrated services, including architecture, engineering and project management, address all aspects of airport development, from terminal planning, conceptual design, and concession planning, to airfield pavement design and parking."
"We're very pleased to have been selected to work with the Comox Valley Airport Authority on the development of the new terminal," says Kerr Lammie, Stantec Architecture, Sr. Associate. "Airport terminals are a major gateway to their communities and the first and last impression many visitors get of the area; that's what makes this project so exciting and important to Comox." The Stantec Victoria office has the reputation of being one of the most innovative architecture firms in the region and they bring that talent to this project. Tom Moore, principal of the Victoria office and as the architect of the successful Victoria International Airport expansion and additions will work closely with Mr. Lammie on this project.
