GRAND OPENING PLANNED FOR NEW AIRPORT FACILITES
12/03/04News Release
The new civil aviation facilities at the Comox Valley Airport will be officially opened on Friday, April 16th at 1:00 PM. The Comox Valley Airport Commission (CVAC) extends a cordial invitation to the public to attend the opening ceremony and tour the new air terminal building.

The Guest of Honour at the opening ceremony will be the Honourable Iona Campagnolo, Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia. Many other dignitaries from the Valley and from outside the Valley will also be in attendance.

Access to the new facilities will be from Knight Road just east of Pritchard/Military Row. Those planning to attend should arrive no later than 12:45 PM. The opening ceremony will take place in front of the entrances to the building, and once the ribbon cutting is over the public will be invited to enter and have a good look at their new air terminal.

The new facilities include a large aircraft parking area and taxiway, a spacious parking lot, and a new air terminal building. The new terminal is ten times bigger than the one it is replacing. It will comfortably accommodate the increasing passenger demand. In 2003, 167,000 passengers used the airport compared to 70,000 in 2000. The terminal will house a food concession, a gift shop, and two car rental companies to serve passengers. Currently, 105 people work at the Comox Valley Airport.

The opening ceremony and tour opportunity will close at 4:00 PM. Airline flight operations at the new terminal will commence the following week after the required safety and security checks are complete. More information on flights at the new terminal will be announced at a later date.
