Comox Valley Airport Strengthens Ties with Community Partners The Comox Valley Airport Commission (CVAC) held a "very productive" working session with its key community stakeholders on Tuesday to discuss the role of the airport and its related facilities within the Comox Valley. Present at the meeting were representatives from the City of Courtenay, the Town of Comox, the Village of Cumberland, the Comox Valley Regional District (CVRD), the Comox Valley Chamber of Commerce and the Comox Valley Economic Development Society (CVEDS). These "nominating entities" are the six bodies responsible for nominating directors to serve on the CVAC board. "This was a very productive meeting in which key elements of our core values were explored," said Ken Dawson, CVAC Chair and co-chair of the working session. "We feel it's important that our mission, vision and values are aligned as much as possible with our community partners, and there's certainly some common ground there. Partnership was a key element of the meeting." The Airport Commission scheduled the working session in order to answer questions pertaining to its recent Independent Governance Review, which was released in January. It was the first time that CVAC co-chaired a meeting with a representative from one of its nominating entities - Courtenay Mayor Greg Phelps, who's also Chair of the CVRD. "I was pleased to see such strong support from attendees for the concept of a communications protocol as outlined in the recent Independent Governance Review," said Phelps. "This will contribute to ongoing effective communication between all parties. "Clarity of governance issues has improved and I feel that we all have a much greater appreciation of the issues relating to the Airport Commission," he added. "I look forward to the ongoing success of the airport in the Valley." The Comox Valley Airport Commission received positive feedback from its community stakeholders regarding the importance of the airport within the community, said Dawson. This input will assist the CVAC board during an upcoming strategic planning process, expected to begin this spring. "I was pleased to hear that CVAC is continuing to move forward with new opportunities that will benefit our community and the region," said CVEDS president Susan Toresdahl. "We all recognize the significant economic benefits that this airport plays in our region and we support its endeavours." The Comox Valley Airport Commission is the governing authority for the operation of the Comox Valley Airport. The nine-member Commission is broadly representative of the Comox Valley community and is a federally incorporated non-profit entity. It was established through letters patent in 1996.
