At the outset of 2009 the tourism industry painted a gloomy picture with airline travel was predicted to be down by about 10 percent. By June the Comox Valley Airport was bucking the industry trend and was seeing the beginning of a recovery in passenger traffic. By year's end the passenger numbers that moved through Comox totaled 289,978 just slightly behind 2008 by 4.6 percent.
"Happily the Comox Airport recovered earlier than many other North American airports and as a result performed much better than anticipated" says Ian Heselgrave, Operations Manager. When asked what factors might have played into the earlier than expected recovery he offers the following "the domestic market recovered more quickly than the international market and many attractive price points were on offer". InterVISTAS Inc. conducted its annual airport customer satisfaction and benchmarking study and it included top marks for the Comox Valley Airport for the sixth consecutive year. Incoming CEO Shirley de Silva congratulates and thanks everyone who works and volunteers at the Comox Airport for their ongoing dedication to customer service. "We recognize the importance of continuous improvement and we take action on all issues within our control. Our staff and volunteers take pride in their work and we are extremely happy that their efforts are appreciated." Mid Island Gifts owner Diane Weir says she was very happy to see business pick up in early summer. "In my commitment to customer service I hired two additional staff to meet the increase in visitors. I also made some improvements and renovations including rearranging of the floor space to be easier to navigate for people in wheelchairs." Weir goes on to remind the traveling public that "If you buy it from Mid Island, you will be able to take it on the plane. Of course, travelers to the USA are advised to check with their airline with regards to carry-on regulations. We do our best to pre check our product lines with airport security. In 2010 we'll be ready with strong local products, and continued excellent customer service for travelers and locals alike." In early November the airport café came under new ownership of Andrea Wagemaker and Jackie Blocka. They changed the name to On the Fly Café and introduced a number of enhancements to better serve the public. These included expanded hours, an on-site baking, an expanded menu, and a new compliment of staff. Renovations of the café will be commencing soon with completion scheduled for the end of April. In the meantime the new owners welcome your suggestions and feedback. Social media is a reality of today's world. Comox Airport has recently added Twitter to their marketing repertoire. Marketing manager Kathy Penner sees this as a great opportunity to broaden the message about the airport and the diverse tourism attractions on Vancouver Island.
